The Koran and Congress

After reading Mr. Prager's recent column re: newly elected Keith Miller's desire to assume office by taking his oath on the Koran I could only shake my head, a little more saddened for America.  The embrace with which she has offered succor to millions throughout her short-lived history is being returned not as an embrace but rather as a stranglehold.  Those who say they cling to her are now smothering her. It breaks my heart.

America and her society were predicated on very basic ideals.  Basic yes, but dearly held and undiluted.  The fact that the Bible and God are included  in these basic and foundational ideals is a simple and indisputable fact.  Why would a Muslim want to serve in a representative capacity, a society based on Judeo-Christian concepts and ideals?  Will he truly be able to act effectively for a constituency which I would venture safely to say is most probably more Christian than Muslim???

Personally, I find it offensive and even arrogant that he would suggest entering into America's political process by taking an oath on any other text than the Holy Bible which our forbearers held so dear.  I for one advocate freedom of religion and belief in our society, but certainly not at the cost of relegating that society's basic precepts to a backseat to avoid perceived cultural offenses.  I agree with Mr. Prager but would go one step farther and insist (legally) that those who have chosen to enter the realm of public service, do so by outwardly and honestly embracing the processes, beliefs and foundations that created the (re)public in the first place.
